Bluebird: ‘Lock it away and interest will wane’

On 4 January 1967, Campbell had propelled the machine to its very limits in an effort to smash through the 300mph (480km/h) barrier. Unable to wrest it back under control, his hydroplane violently lifted from the lake’s surface before smashing down with ferocious, frightening force. Its pilot, perhaps the last from an era of great British adventurers, paid the ultimate price. Those final, foreboding moments, captured in grainy black-and-white film stock, have horrified and intrigued ever since. Over 100 Whales Still In Russian “Whale Jail” Months After First Spotted As Investigation Drags On

Somewhere in the realm of 100 belugas and killer whales are being held captive in what’s been dubbed a “whale jail” by media in Russia and abroad. Prosecutors are investigating the cramped quarters and potentially life-threatening conditions, especially as the winter chill freezes ice into the enclosures. A team must now work to remove the ice so the animals can breathe and surface for air.  Activists fear the whales will be sold to water parks and aquariums in China, which would be a blatant disregard of international laws. The concern arises from reports of such precedent by the companies between 2013 and 2016, according to Russian Newspaper Novaya Gazeta. Original Content podcast: Netflixs Velvet Buzzsaw is lethally dull

Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo and writer-director Dan Gilroy — who worked together on the creepy crime thriller “Nightcrawler” — have reunited for a new Netflix Original film, “Velvet Buzzsaw.” While “Nightcrawler” wasn’t perfect, it was tense and unsettling, filled with eerily beautiful shots of nighttime L.A., plus a career-best performance from Gyllenhaal. It’s hard to believe that the same team was responsible for the muddled “Buzzsaw,” a film that tries to combine art-world satire and horror movies scares, ultimately failing on both counts. The setup involves the death of a mysterious artist, leaving behind a trove of strangely compelling paintings. Soon, though, everyone involved in promoting or selling these paintings starts dying too. On the latest episode of the Original …

Why do people take pictures at crash scenes?

Image copyright Reuters Image caption Was taking pictures of those killed in the Grenfell Tower fire a “mindless” act? Dr Lasana Harris, an associate professor in experimental psychology at University College London, has researched the behaviour of people at emergency scenes. He has a theory on why people reach for their phones – it’s not so much what goes through their minds, it’s what doesn’t. “We live in a culture where [photography on phones] is what people do; it’s normative behaviour.” Dr Harris thinks the recording of the dead or the injured is accordingly “mindless” – people pull out their phones automatically, for scenes “good, bad or indifferent”. But can such actions be explained away so easily? Image copyright UK …
