Miley Cyrus Opens Up About How Her Role In Hannah Montana Impacted Her Mental Health – Viral Thread

Remember the summer of 2013, when Miley Cyrus drastically changed her image from a relatively wholesome teenager to a 20-year-old woman who embraced her sexuality in a way that many regarded as vulgar?

Well, these days it seems that the young, polarizing singer has had enough of revamping her image because the music videos for her latest album Younger Now are very tame in comparison. However, what certainly hasn’t changed is her candidness and the fact that she doesn’t shy away from speaking about touchy subjects. In a recent interview, Miley Cyrus has opened up about how playing the main character in Hannah Montana had a very detrimental effect on her mental health. Miley, who is now a coach on The Voice talked to CBS and delved into how playing the character that turned her into a teen sensation, fuelled some serious identity issues for herself. “America feels like my aunt [telling me], you know, you’re growing up so much and we don’t want to see you grow up,” she said, “I think why people loved Hannah Montana was because Hannah Montana did feel real, and that’s because I was under there.” Miley later claims in the interview that she couldn’t stop her Hannah Montana persona merging with her own personality, and according to the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer, her time on set caused irreversible harm to her emotional wellbeing. “I think that’s probably what’s a little bit wrong with me now.” she explained “I mark that up to doing some extreme damage in my psyche as an adult person.” According to the former Disney star, her risque ‘Wrecking Ball’ video did wonders for her sense of self. It allowed Miley to distance herself from the wholesome teen star she felt she was pretending to be. “I didn’t realize that it was going to shift me into truly being my own person,” Miley confessed. “It changed my life. I felt like that divide, that boundary, was very clear.” The video marked a very clear shift from the rather tame kid-friendly music videos she used to film during her child star days. And while it has been over four years since the raunchy video was first released for the world to see, it’s fair to say it has left a long-lasting impression on us. From that point forward, we knew that Miley meant business. If her daring video for ‘We Can’t Stop’ was Miley’s way of testing the waters, by the time ‘Wrecking Ball’ came out, she really was going in for the kill. Then to add to her newfound image, at the 2013 Video Music Awards Miley really steamed things up with her sexiest performance yet. The video and the award show performance sparked a lot of criticism, especially from worried parents who couldn’t wrap their heads around her sudden shift from a model teen pop star to a grown woman who made “questionable” decisions. “I got that women-judgment-double-standard in a heavy dosing, and I’m okay with that,” Miley said. “I just recently read Hillary Clinton’s book [What Happened] and now I think of things in a whole different way. I always think, ‘If she can lose an election, I can do this.’” The former child star admitted that she has learned not to regret the decisions that she makes, and tries to life her life by this very laid back philosophy: “The more that you love your own decisions, the less you need other people to love them.” According to the 24-year-old pop star, there is no shame in hitting rock bottom and learning from your mistakes. “I’ve learned a lot from a lot of people who have gotten knocked down to get back up, so I’m okay with that,” she explained. Say what you like about Miley, but we can always count on her to be open and honest about issues that other celebrities would normally keep under wraps. Hannah Montana may have been the show that catapulted her to stardom, but the effect it had on her personal life clearly wasn’t entirely positive. In any case, we wish her good luck for her career in the future, and look forward to seeing what she has in store for us next.
