Maher compares Trump to Michael Jackson: Both could ‘shoot someone on Fifth Avenue’ and not lose fans

BILL MAHER DEFENDS ILHAN OMAR’S ISRAEL COMMENTS: ‘I DON’T KNOW WHY THIS HAS TO BE SEEN AS ANTI-SEMITIC’ “I’m glad you’re saying that,” Maher told former RNC chairman Michael Steele. “People should be scared.” Maher then explained that he had watched “Leaving Neverland,” which features two accusers’ claims that Jackson sexually abused them as children. Then Maher compared the alleged misdeeds of the King of Pop, who died in 2009, to those of the current president. “It struck me that there are two things that are very similar to Donald Trump,” Maher said. “One, Michael Jackson could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his fans wouldn’t leave him. And two, both of them commit crimes in the open. “It struck me …

Rotten Tomatoes Claims ‘Bug’ Responsible For ‘Captain Marvel’ Trolling

review-bombed” “ After “Captain Marvel” finally hit theaters, According to THR, “Captain Marvel” was likely being “sandbagged” by a wave of trolls. As of 6 p.m. Eastern, however, the number of ratings had dropped from 58,000 to a little more than 10,000. Rotten Tomatoes sent a statement to HuffPost saying that a glitch had inflated the number of ratings. The website told us it has “identified a bug” that erroneously rolled the pre-release “want to see” ratings into the post-release ratings, resulting in that alarmingly high number: Rotten Tomatoes reiterated that it plans to add more “clarity around fans’ pre and post-release opinions” and “for movies moving forward, the quantity of user ratings should only reflect the number of people …

ICYMI: This Luke Perry Story Will Make Your Inner 13-Year-Old Cry – Perez Hilton

Every story about Luke Perry the person just makes us realize we didn’t deserve him. One we missed amid all the remembrances of his family, friends, and costars this week was a story from Heather Matarazzo. The Princess Diaries actress shared a story not of working with Luke but of being on the receiving end of his unending kindness. For those who don’t remember the indie hit Welcome To The Dollhouse, it was a portrait of tween awkwardness which has never quite been recaptured. Total dreamboat. Got it. “Since then, I’ve met quite a few well-known people, but Luke Perry will always stand out. He had just come off 90210, and for those that don’t know, that show was a FRENZY!!! People were …

Leaving Neverland Is About More Than Michael Jackson Betches

In the past 48 hours, I watched the entirety of Leaving Neverland, director Dan Reed’s two-part, four-hour documentary about two men who claim to have suffered sexual abuse as children, and how they grapple with that trauma to this day. To say I have an emotional hangover would be an understatement—I am sad in ways I didn’t know I could be. While sob-emoji texting my friends, though, I noticed a pattern. When someone hadn’t heard of Leaving Neverland, I clarified: I was watching “the Michael Jackson documentary.” And it’s true—the man accused of sexual abuse in this doc is Michael Jackson, and “Neverland” in the title refers to Jackson’s 2,800-acre ranch, where he allegedly abused an unknown number of prepubescent boys …

Anti-vaxxers, the Momo challenge … why lies spread faster than facts

With Trump making six false claims a day and bogus Brexit claims spreading, we live in a disorienting post-truth era. It all began with the David Irving trial, writes Jonathan Freedland The queasiness keeps coming back, a very specific malady that I thought Id put behind me nearly 20 years ago. But each time I read about, say, the bogus version of the Momo challenge, or the rise and rise of the anti-vaxxer movement, the symptoms return, stronger than ever. If asked by a doctor to describe the sensation, Id say it feels as if the ground beneath my feet is slipping away, that there is nothing firm or solid to stand on. What triggers it are lies, usually in …

Leaving Neverland Forces Us to Confront Our Feral Fandom

He was ours. And because he was ours I told myself I wouldn't watch it. I told myself that there was a chamber somewhere deep within, somewhere perhaps beyond reason and logic, that Michael Jackson inhabited. That I wanted to protect that place, that altar. That I needed to protect it. For myself. Because isn't that what we do with people we love? We stand by them, champion them, promise to shield them. When I texted a friend in the moments after I'd watched Leaving Neverland, expressing that it was unquestionably the darkest, and perhaps most haunting, portrait of Jackson's personal life we might ever witness, she cut me off. "Not interested," she shot back. "Leave Michael alone. He's dead. …

‘Us’ scares up screams and applause at SXSW premiere

(CNN)Jordan Peele is up to his old tricks. “Us” tells the story of family, led by Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, who are terrorized by their shadowy doubles. The film garnered cheers and strong reviews on social media from those in the theater. “It should surprise no one that US is a very satisfying (and anxiety-inducing) follow up to GET OUT,” Eric Kohn, IndieWire’s chief critic tweeted. “What’s more fascinating: that a high-concept FUNNY GAMES/Hitchcock/Cronenberg/Bradbury mashup could feel so fresh at the same time.” Without giving away too many of the film’s spooky secrets, it explores topical themes of division. “We are at a time where we fear ‘the other,’” Peele said during a Q&A session after the screening. “I …

Triple Frontier review military vets steal big in solid Netflix action thriller

Machismo and money intersect in a glossy, mostly compelling film about a high-stakes heist in South America, starring Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac At this stage, given their ever-increasing prolificacy, the very definition of what a Netflix original movie is has become a bit foggy. Unlike a smaller independent, whose library of titles might share surface-level similarities, the streaming giant has morphed into a bigger studio, churning out films across all genres, trying to do it all and sometimes, just sometimes, actually succeeding. Its latest, and one of its biggest to date, is Triple Frontier, an action thriller that feels very much like a glossy theatrical release, and one whose messy route through development hell reveals that for a long …

Keith Flint: the neon demon who started a fire under British pop

By gleefully escalating the moral panic around British dance culture, the Prodigy frontman showed that rave could be the true successor to rocknroll Like virtually every 90s dance act that unexpectedly ascended from releasing underground club tracks to selling a lot of albums, the Chemical Brothers, the Art of Noise and alt-rock band the Breeders and partly down to the video, in which Flint relentlessly played up to the camera. Not for the last time, the sight of him on national television provoked complaints from the audience. His persona fitted the moment perfectly: thanks to the Criminal Justice Act and a spate of high-profile ecstasy-related deaths most notably that of Leah Betts, an 18-year-old Essex school pupil the British dance …
