Cantina Talk: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Reshoots Are Happening, Apparently

It is, as the saying goes, a dark time for the Rebellion—and for everyone else involved in the Star Wars franchise, as things are astonishingly quiet out there right now. Could it be that the silence persists because everyone is working on projects in the lull between Star Wars Celebration and D23? Perhaps the looming shadow of Comic-Con International in San Diego is soaking up the conversation in the nerd sphere. Or maybe, there's just … nothing to actually talk about right now when it comes to Star Wars. Well, nothing aside from the news below, of course. The Rise of Skywalker Reshoots Are On Source: Multiple online outlets Probability of accuracy: It would certainly appear to be true, and …

Star Wars Fandom and the Immature Politics of Nostalgia

The warning is right there on the label: A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. That's how Jedi say "once upon a time;" when Star Wars came out in 1977, those luminous blue words signified that audiences were about to see a bit of a throwback, hearkening to 1930s adventure serials, pulp fiction, Westerns, and samurai movies. It wasn't just style. The plot of that first Star Wars movie was turbid with nostalgia—Ben Kenobi had fought in something reverentially called the Clone Wars. The lightsaber was an elegant weapon from a more civilized age. All the tech was broken, beat up. Things in the galaxy used to be better. Nostalgia has animated the spirit of Star Wars …

Avengers: Endgame fever set to make it first $1bn film in under a week

The climax to the Marvel superhero series has broken pre-sale box office records and is on track to shatter many more If any movie is critic-proof, it is Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of 21 previous titles in the wildly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, which began with 2008s Iron Man. Pre-sale records have already been destroyed by the cinematic colossus, with the film, which is released on Thursday, a fitting, satisfying and surprising final fling. Avengers: Endgame holds a 6% approval rating on Mashable: At both the screenings I attended, the audience reactions were so loud at certain points that entire lines of dialogue were swallowed up. Which is probably just fine with Marvel: all the more reason for fans to …

Cantina Talk: Here’s What One Dude Has Seen of Episode IX

You're not alone if you're thinking that the Star Wars franchise is seeming just a little bit … more compressed lately. The animated series Star Wars Resistance just brought its first season to an end by stepping into the shadow (and runtime) of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and in doing so left only the comics and books to remind fans there's a universe beyond the movies. Or, well, that's the case until Lucasfilm reveals more about the Disney+ shows. For now, though, let's get lost in what's going on in the run up to the next big Star Wars flick. A Least One Person Has Seen (Some of) Episode IX The Source: One lucky Disney shareholder Probability of Accuracy: …
